The presence of a small tunnel or cavity inside a fruit, particularly an apple, is usually indicative of insect larval exercise. This situation arises when bugs, typically moths or beetles, lay eggs on or close to the fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the apple to feed on its flesh, creating attribute tunnels and probably compromising the fruit’s integrity.
Such insect-induced injury reduces the marketability and shelf lifetime of the affected produce. The presence of inside feeding can introduce secondary fungal or bacterial infections, accelerating spoilage. Traditionally, preventative measures akin to orchard spraying and built-in pest administration methods have been employed to attenuate the incidence of infestation and subsequent fruit injury.
